Welcome. My name is Alexander Liss, or housethegrate, depending on whether you live in the real world or the internet world, respectively. I am a guitarist and I try my best to be a composist. Yes, I know that's not a real word, but I like it.

NEW ALBUM "HOUSEWORKS" - ORDER NOW! |
Posted Wednesday April 9th, 2008 9:05 PM by housethegrate in News
April 12, Saturday. Tempe, AZ. Yucca Tap Room. Guest playing with The Minibosses
May 15, Thursday. Baltimore, MD. The Sidebar. Full set of temp sound solutions songs.
Hey everybody. I know I haven't been updating this sucker for almost half a year now. Been tossed and turned and rotated across the country and inside out of my mind here and there, and a long period passed where I couldn't operate at a proper frequency. That doesn't mean that new tunes aren't percolating in my computer, my fingertips, and my gulliver. I played a full set with temp sound solutions at MagFest 6, and a lot of ideas were discussed for various future collaborative recordings between various different people at the convention.
New tracks are on the way.
Following MagFest, I went on a short tour with Alex Atchley Experience, earning some of the most enjoyable and memorable experiences of my life. Some shows sucked, some of them were amazing. Unfortunately, there were no recordings or photos from this tour. I will definitely be working with Alex again, in recordings and live performance. Keep an eye out for Alex on tour this summer with Cheap Dinosaurs.
I recently moved into a house with my awesome girlfriend. Once my audio interface is fixed and I get home from Megamatt's Megamove (driving from South Carolina to Seattle!), new songs will be blasting out me like Lo-Pan's eyeball laser beams. My setup is way superious to anything I've ever had before, and I can finally use my half-stack.
Also, check out some demos of my friend's songs that we'll be working on together - R-Type.

I'm flying out to Texas at the end of the month to play my first full set with Alex Atchley Experience. It's Alex's birthday bash blowout, and we're gonna have a major kickbutt time. I'll share audio recordings afterwards for sure.

Balloon Fight - new high score close to record!!
Posted Friday October 12th, 2007 11:30 AM by housethegrate in News
I achieved this new high score a few nights ago on my only attempt of the night. It felt good, as I hadn't busted it for a couple months. The high score listed on Twin Galaxies is 507,070, only a few thousand more than mine here. I just need to start video taping my runs and I might have a record on my hands in time.

Triple Stack - Powerstoof triple collab
Posted Saturday July 7th, 2007 8:51 AM by housethegrate in News
For June's Dwelling of Duels free month, I joined Spamtron and Eric Dude, my west coast warriors, for a power collab to honor fighting to survive, biggie stacks, and the omnipresent STOOF. The resulting sound was short, powerful, and stacked. In an arrangement from UN Squadron, we bring the stoof back to family entertainment. Enjoy it with pride. Amen.

Alright! If you missed out on Dwelling of Duels this month, you missed the ultimate battle. Fire vs Ice in the most significant throwdown in the history of this feud. I redid a few parts of my song and remastered it for this official release of the final product:
Go Blow Snow For a Year
This song is special to me, because it's my way of saying goodbye to one of my favorite bands ever, Chromelodeon. It's a tribute to their style. Enjoy it, my friends!
Also, do yourself a huge doublestacker favor and listen to Winter Madness, Ashane and Zoast's DoD entry. This is definitely the best work from either of them.

I've been a bit obsessed with Balloon Fight: Mode C lately. It's truly an amazing game - just brilliantly conceived and executed. I managed to get a pretty kickass score.

Tab for 'Light in the Fortress'
Posted Saturday May 12th, 2007 5:18 PM by housethegrate in News
Last night Mig50 asked me to write a tab for Madara (the original song, not the arrangement with Ashane). I wrote that out, and I was still in the tabbing mood so I wrote out Fortress as well. People have been requesting it for a long time, so here it is finally.

Hello everyone, thanks for coming back to visit my site. I've been away for such a long time and haven't been able to work on music. I appreciate the continued interest. On my recent trip to Philly I absorbed some strong new influences (musically and alcoholically). Chromelodeon, Temp Sound Solutions, Dino (Cheap Dinosaurs), Alex Mauer, NAOMI - all musicians whom I greatly admire - were the source of this new inspiration. My primary goal (aside from a top secret recording project) is to write a set of material for solo live performance. It'll be synth/chip heavy electronic rock music with electric guitar.
I just watched a great documentary on the depletion of oil and the true state of many things in the world at present. It's called The End of Suburbia. Torrent it, download it, rent it, library it, just watch it.

Hey my friends. As many of you know, I'm in New Zealand for a few months. I'm cycling and camping across the whole country till April 22. I was planning on updating my travel log with my progress, but so far I've been on computers significantly less than I had expected. Everything has been amazing so far, aside from sunburn and mosquitos. Once I get home I'll put together a full presentation of my travel log and pictures.
In the meantime, if you haven't ordered the album yet, now's the time! Things are very expensive in NZ, and I'm traveling pretty thriftcore. All orders help keep me afloat here in the southern hemisphere. My dad is handling all orders while I'm away, so it'll be shipped out to you promptly.
Peace, friend.

MAGFest 5 - A legendary weekend
Posted Saturday January 13th, 2007 5:06 AM by housethegrate in News
I finally returned from my trip to MAGFest in Virginia. If you don't know what it is, it's where everyone in the VGM community travels to once a year (some from across the planet) to hang out, party, play video games, and rock out to all the best bands in the scene.
I got to perform with one of the coolest of these bands. Parasprinter invited me to play Madara with them, a song that's on Houseworks. It was truly an honor, and a lot of fun. The next night I performed my Magic Sword arrangement, Crumbling Statues, by myself with a backing track. This is the only time I ever perform these songs, so it's always pretty special. I'm hoping to have a video posted soon.
Thanks to everyone who bought my album there, and everyone who has ordered online. Every copy sold helps me get through 3 months of camping in New Zealand starting in a couple weeks.

Live guitar solo - Guitarmageddon 2002
Posted Monday October 23rd, 2006 4:00 AM by housethegrate in News
I was 17 for this performance at Guitar Center's national competition. This was the regional finals in Seattle. The whole thing was kind of intimidating, because there were so many awesome guitarists there, and all of them a lot older than I was.

Here's a video I made in January. So I guess it's not really new, but this is the first I've released it.

Uber Dyke - entry for the OMC7
Posted Friday October 20th, 2006 1:40 PM by housethegrate in News
I wrote a song about dykes for the seventh Original Music Competition at thetesttube. The theme was pop songs. The lyrics may be offensive to some, but this was not my intention. It's supposed to be lighthearted and fun. If you happen to be a dyke and you're offended by this, I apologize.
This is my first attempt at singing. Yes, I know that I suck at it.

Okay, so I did this song about a year ago for the first Original Music Competition at thetesttube. I had intended to make the song longer, which is why it was never officially released. But I decided to leave it as it is. So here's the remastered and official release.
